Default MMI sudden issue

Good morning, i have just picked up my A6 3.0 from a private sale and love it but today i got in and all god apart from the screen did not pop out like it does. so i pressed the button and the screen came out but was black with a little light showing and then went back in. if i look at the entertainment and nav on the dashboard between the speed etc it shows a message as in the photo below. a bit stuck on what to do as was fine a couple of days ago when i last used it. its a a6 2011 3.0 model.

He claims it to be a 2011, 3.0 but I wouldn't think the dash would look like that.

Hi it’s 2011, I have since found a unit in the boot on the passenger side in the storage and I have taken it out as there was also water in there. But not really sure what to do next. I guess it this as with water in the area it makes sense .

Your chassis is considered a C7. Your module was manufactured late 2011 but I suspect the chassis is MY 2012. Also can depend where on the planet you are located as Audi had staggered release dates in different countries / continents.

Obviously resolve the water leak first then fix the electronics.

You could try cleaning the corrosion from connector pins with Dexoit red can or similar. Could open the module and inspect electronics for water damage, etc. Used replacement modules are available but you will likely run into Component Protection DTC when you replace it. If your original module is not salvageable then recommend do not throw it away as it would be useful for a CP eeprom chip swap into a replacement module to avoid CP.

Could try posting in the C7 forum for more help.

Thanks for your answer. I am based in the uk. Glad someone has be able to work out my model of a c7. It must have been at the cross over year !!. Am hoping there is someplace near me that would be happy to do cp protection if I go down the second hand route if needed. Going to have a look at the current unit in case it’s very slight water and like you say a clean might sort it. It’s been in the house for a few days so dry …. You never know !!!

Just because it is "dry" doesn't ensure that it will work. The water intrusion almost certainly carried minerals with it and could, therefore, leave trace amounts behind resulting in semi-shorts as it were. I'm not saying that it isn't worth trying to clean it up but just applying power to it when it "looks" dry probably won't cut it. Use a >90% alcohol or even distilled water and a long, soft-bristled brush to flush any traces of deposits away. The good news is such deposits usually release pretty easily from the solder mask on circuit boards.

Thanks for your answer. I can see myself buying another one if I can find someone etc that could recode it. Seem to be a few hundred pounds to buy. I get as long as it a the same model number and around the same date or buying built etc ? Cheers

Default Update

So had a bit more of a look and checked all fuses and all good. Tried plugging the unit back in and no different. If this unit is faulty would that also stop the screen coming up automatically when you start the car ? I plugged the unit back in after a couple of days of it in the house and the screen didn’t come up still so pressed the button and it came up and showed the radio screen and let me scroll but no sound and sound disabled then the screen just went blank and shut . Could all this be due to this unit …. Just trying to find where to start lol

Open the unit up and look at the circuit board. If it got water inside but it's not too corroded you can usually clean up the board and connectors with pure iso alcohol and a toothbrush or similar. Lots of rinsing.
