Default P2006 after thermostat replacement

Hey everyone! Happy new year!

Car is due for a smog check for me to renew my registration. Replaced the thermostat since there was a CEL with the car not reaching normal operating temps (thermostat partially open).

Replaced the thermostat and now get a different CEL - P2006.

008198 - Intake Manifold Flap; Bank 1
P2006 - 006 - Stuck Closed - MIL ON

I am only getting this CEL (not the P2007 like I've seen in some of the other threads with similar problems)

I've checked the vacuum lines and everything looks good on surface - haven't been able to do a vacuum pump test. I didn't remove the intake manifold so didn't have to mess with the flaps (though I checked and they appear to be on the inside).

Any thoughts?

Happy New Year! When I had that problem on my '05 A6 Avant, I found the the vacuum chamber for one of the lower intakes was leaking, which caused me to replace one of the lower manifolds. I determined the fault using with my manual MityVac vacuum pump.

I didn't hear anything, so it was only the CEL DTC that led me to check the vacuum system. I disconnected the vacuum line from the round vacuum actuator and connected my vacuum pump to the vacuum nipple. When I applied a vacuum, the chamber would not hold any vacuum. The defect was on Bank 1, and the lower manifold I replaced was P/N 06E–133–126–K. Since I had to remove the complete intake, I also de-carboned the diverter plates and the valves before I re-assembled everything.

If you have enough carbon buildup in the 3.2, this can also cause the flaps to stick. The intake plenum is easy to pull on the 3.2 and removing it will allow you to see the flaps moving.

Thanks everyone! Took the car to my indy who fixed the issue.

The black thingie had come off of the white button. Hard to explain but the issue is shown here:

He just snapped it back in place - said that if it continues to come off then the entire manifold will need to be replaced!

If you have an 06 A6 then the mechanic is wrong, the intake flaps are not part of the plenum, they are separate pieces sitting between the plenum and the head. Has the car been checked for carbon buildup? Maybe there is enough buildup that the flaps on that side are simply unable to move and that is causing it to come off? Carbon cleaning on the 3.2 is very easy, the plenum comes off quickly and with a walnut blasting machine it's a pretty easy job. A little messy, but easy. If you've never done a carbon cleaning on the engine then the intake valves (and the lower plenum pieces with the flaps) are probably quite encrusted in carbon.

Actually, Keli Kelsko has a video in his YouTube site of a clever permanent fix for a couple bucks.
