Poly V belt tensioner fail
Hi all,
tensioner has failed on my 2006 2.7tdi V6 A6 S-Line
ive had a couple of people look at it. What I don’t understand is
- the water pump pulley has play in it. Does this mean the pump is screwed and needs replaced as the pulley seems in ok condition
- belt size is listed as 2460 & 2490 so I’m unsure which one to replace it with
- mechanic says the crankshaft damper pulley needs replaced but it was only done in May. I’m guessing he has noted some play in it but surely there will be play given the huge rubber damper inside the pulley.

If the water pump pulley is securely mounted to the water pump then the play is in the water pump shaft. If shaft has play then it is considered an automatic replace because it will start leaking at any time. When the water pump starts to leak then it soaks the belt and washes lubricant out of belt rollers which is another automatic replace of the belt parts if left too long. An engine bay fluid contaminated belt is an automatic replace as it will fail prematurely.
If unsure of belt size then use the VIN to lookup parts.
Was the crank dampener recently replaced with an OE quality part or an inexpensive aftermarket part? There should be zero detectable play in a healthy dampener and a properly installed OE quality dampener should last for years.
