3.0TDI with fuel pump toothed belt that doesn't fit
I fixed all that and i got a new 83 teeth belt kit but it's too long so the spring roller tensioner doesn't tension the belt at all and just spins around. The spring mechanism inside is supposed to turn about 90 degrees for it to be in the right place and keep the correct tension but it turns 0 degrees.
I then tried the 82 teeth belt for another similar 3.0TDi engine that is otherwise identical but it's too short. I can barely get it to fit and the tensioner is touching the bottom of the timing belt cover when i get it to the correct tension.
All gearwheels are correct and numbers match the ones on the parts diagrams. ASB is stamped into the block so the engine is the correct one. The fuelpump is in the right place since all bolts line up perfectly between the cover, pump and engine head.
I have changed hundreds of timing belts and chains and this has never ever happend before.
Please help.
I ordered an OEM tensioner and belt to see if that will solve the issue. If that won't fit the dealership will contact VAG. The timing belt kit i used first were INA and GATES so they are high quality OEM replacement parts so they should not have this problem. I installed hundreds of INA kits and i never had any problems before.
Because it moved so much back and forth that it ground off about 2 mm material on the right side. The pump was now slightly tilted and also the belt tensioner that is attached to the fuel pump bracket got tilted and moved further down. Because the tensioner puts tension on the belt from below it was now to far down to put the correct tension.
Solution was to put a spacer, around the bolt hole, between the bracket and the engine where it had ground off material. Then the tensioner will move back to its correct position and put the correct tension on the belt. Car still runs great.

It might be worn different on yours but the right belts should fit if everything is correct with the pump and tensioner.
