UK: Gearbox issue! c6 estate
So i have my 2006 a6 c6 avant, its an Automatic, and every time it "changes gears" in 'D' there is a shaking kind of vibration coming from the gearbox (i think?). It does eventually change gears but it feels as if i am damaging it so i am reluctant to drive it. Is this a common problem and are there any solutions apart from taking it to audi themselves?

What you describe is not normal. Has the ATF nad filter ever been changed in the tranny? How many miles on your A6? If you need service, you should find a good independent shop in your area that services VAG cars.

Required Replacement
At 110k miles my 2006 A6 Avant automatic transmission made a loud bang when accelerating onto the freeway. Then the weird shifts started. It was drivable but would take 20-30 seconds to shift sometimes. After much research on repair options and used transmissions I chose a new one installed at dealer for $6750. Obviously well over the Blue Book value but considering the quality of the Avant, it has a much higher useful value.

It sounds to me like the gearbox mount has failed. I had this same issue on a Jaguar XF years ago and my A4 B5. Both were fitted with ZF transmissions. Also, if you have the transmission mounts check, check the engine mounts. My A4 engine mounts were totally done and due to the engine moving under load due to failed mounts as well as the gearbox mounts, the gearbox would make a clunking noise from the casing hitting the failed mount and bouncing up and down under load or when suddenly reducing load.
