Default Transmission Issue, Adding fluid issue

I have an 09 A6 Quattro. A couple of weeks ago when leaving work I would put the car in reverse and it wouldn't move. Putting in park and then reverse again it would engage. Last week when leaving work it would not shift out of first gear and was giving a gearbox/transmission light. Shutting the car off then back on it acted normal. The next morning I looked under the car and noticed I had a small leak coming from the tranny pan. I figured it was low on fluid. I bought a couple quarts and a pump and lifted the car up to add fluid. This is where my issue is. Pulling the fill plug it pours out. I dropped the front and lifted the back thinking that would cause the fluid to go to the front, but it poured out as well. So with the car level, or front up or rear raised, it just pours out when I pull the plug. How did the dealership get fluid in it when it was on a lift sitting level? I'm pulling my hair out over this and hopefully someone can give me some insight on how to get fluid into my transmission. And yes, it was the 17mm fill plug, not the 5mm drain.

Note that there is specified method to proper fill the transmission with the fluid a minimum of 30 C and a maximum of 40 C. Transmission pan also needs to be level. The correct fluid level is when the fluid just runs out of the drain.

Late to the thread, but in case it helps others, just to point out you’re also meant to monitor the transmission temperature and shift through the gears while refilling, to correctly distribute the fluid within the transmission and end up with the correct level before you close the fill plug.

My notes from when I did it are below, but it’s years since I used them so this is all I have to go on:

with engine off
Fill with fluid until trickle comes out then refit fill plug by hand
Connect vcds and monitor trans temp
Engine on, idle 650-950rpm
Select R and then D. Manually shift all gears and hold each for 10s
Run 2000rpm 30 seconds in N
Shift to P
Monitor trans temp until 30C is reached, can switch on AC for faster warm up
(If 35C is reached, allow to cool down)
Open fill plug and fill with more fluid until it runs out fill hole, then wait until 40C is reached
Wait until only single drops come from filler hole at 40C
close fill plug. 17mm hex key, 80Nm torque
Turn off engine

One thing I discovered doing the ATF replacement on my '06 A6 Avant is that the recommended ATF temperature range is 35 - 45 C per the Bentley Repair Manual for the correct fluid level indication.

As for the leak of the original poster.

When replacing the pan gasket, don't forget about the O-Ring on the electrical connector going into the side of the tranny.

Also, since you are in there to replace the filter, might as well replace the square sealing tube that goes into the valvebody. Just drop the valvebody, I think it's officially called a "Mechatronic Unit" or something.

This one.

My first A6 had transmission slipping issues in the winter only. I had to rev the car to get it to move. Turned out to be that sealing tube, I replaced it and the tranny worked like new again. Then a month later it started slipping again. This time it was low on fluid because it was leaking through that electrical connector. Replaced the O Ring, topped up the fluid and it ran perfect again.

Pretty cheap fix overall, cost of the filter, fluid and a couple o rings.
