My Audi Q5 has recently been randomly throwing up an error saying "Gearbox malfunction: you can continue driving (limited functionality)", which i've attached at the bottom of this post. Whilst this error is up the speed of the car drastically decreases but rapidly fixes itself after a few seconds when the error disappears.
I've heard so many reasons for why this could be (ranging from a simple gearbox oil filter change being needed to the entire mechatronic unit needing to be replaced) from different garages.
Before spending large amounts of money and time on something I might not need I was hoping to get more opinions on what the common causes of this problem could be and the best course of action to find which of these applies to me.
You'd have to be more accurate about which transmission is involved, and get a scan tool (VCDS) and scan for the actual DTC information to provide some manner of specific error. "malfunction" is not an actionable error statement.
Is this the Multitronic (CVT), s-tronic (DCT), or Tiptronic (ZF)? Better yet, once you have a complete autoscan from VCDS, it'll just put all the relevant details together under 02-auto trans, id info and the DTC info.
For example, the opening post of this thread has workable levels of information. https://forums.ross-tech.com/index.php?threads/23277/ 0B5, so the s-tronic DCT, and specific errors to evaluate. Might even be the same as your scenario.
Mine had this and it turned out all the oil had leaked out of the gearbox. VCDS came up with a random error. Check your gearbox oil before you drive any further.
