2011 Q5 2.0 TFSI Quattro with gearbox issue: Repair or scrap?
Hi all,
I love my 2011 Q5 2.0 TFSI Quattro but I recently got a "Gearbox malfunction" on the dashboard and acceleration just went limp.
I took it to a transmission specialist who has quoted me AU$ 8k saying it needs a new Mechatronic Unit and new clutch.
The car is otherwise in great physical condition (apart from a high oil consumption) with only 100,000 km on the odometer, but the retail guide for this model second-hand is AU$ 7-9k.
My concern is obviously putting 90% of the potential value of the car into a repair when given its age, a number of other costly repairs could be around the corner anyway.
I'm looking for advice on what I should do. My options as I see it are:
It seems nuts to me that a car in otherwise such great condition is essentially worthless by the repair cost matching its value.
I'd be very grateful for any advice on how to proceed.

- Pay up and hope for the best (not tempting)
- Get the car back and shop around for a cheaper repair
- Do a basic DIY job (i.e. change transmission oil and filter) and see if that makes the problem go away
- Cut my losses and scrap the car or sell for a few bob (for spare parts) with full disclosure of the issue
- Any other suggestions...

Why not just get a used transmission, swap it, immobilizer adaptation, carry on. Who would buy brand new parts at dealership prices for a 13yo car?
