2017 Audi Q5 Roof Top Tent - thoughts/questions
I am looking to get a Rooftop Tent and am quickly realizing some things with Thule branded parts. I spoke with a Thule rep and this is what I learned. 1st, the Bars (Wingtip or square) are only really rated to go 24 inches apart from each other. This presents a problem for all rooftop tents I have looked at. 2nd the max weight rating is only 165lbs, (it is unclear if that means while in motion or at any time).
Has anyone had success putting a rooftop tent on an Audi q5 (any year/trim?), and using it? I have seen one set of pictures on this forum's site but they were not from the user and were pictures they took of another AudiQ5 they saw on the road so I am not confident in what they posted.
I am mostly worried about "dimpling/ breaking the glass roof top" on the Q5. I am a bigger guy 235lbs and my partner is around 150lbs, plus we got a 50lb dog and a 5 year old child (who could sleep in the Audi). I was HOPING to do a rooftop tent, a Thule hardshell storage and an awning.
I am starting to think I should abandon the rooftop tent on this small SUV, and instead look for a smaller trailer that I can add rooftop tent bars too OR just a small pull behind camper that is light in weight and can handle fire roads well.
Hit me with your best advice. I am new here so go easy on me.
No way I would recommend a RTT on an Audi Q5. Most of the roof is glass and the rails are nearly flush with the vehicle. If you are going to get a trailer, get a real camper and ditch the RTT idea. You can tow 4,000 pounds plus so why bother with a dinky trailer and what essentially is a plastic bed frame? For the price of a RTT you can find a vintage trailer with some style. Use that for a year, realize a van is what you actually want, sell the Audi and the trailer and get yourself a Sprinter.

Lol you might be on to something there, I had a 1989 Toyota 2WD Cargo Van (that I drove around the country 2x), then a 2007 forester, then a 1989 Right Hand Drive Van From Japan "MasterAceSurf," then a 2007 4Runner. I have had a lot of adventure mobiles so far and this time I wanted a little luxury. I travel up and down the i5 corridor from Bay Area to PDX often and wanted some luxury and something that had AWD so I gravitated towards Audi, but honestly I am kinda kicking myself for not getting a Lexus, but oh well! Here we are.
I think we are just going to camp in a tent on the ground with an air mattress and get a hardshell roof storage for camping. Bears be damned. Also "OneLessSprinter" - I would never.
Wife wants the new Land Cruiser or Lexus GX so we might see the end of the Q5 soon....
