How to Open a Hood with a Broken Release Cable
Disclaimer: This can be a tricky situation. If you're uncomfortable or unsure about any of these steps, it's best to call a professional roadside assistance service.Understanding the Risk
Before you start, it's important to know that working on a car with the hood closed can be dangerous. Be cautious and take your time.Tools You Might Need:
- A strong flashlight
- A sturdy metal rod or coat hanger
- A pair of pliers
- Gloves
Steps to Try:
- Locate the Hood Latch:
- Use the flashlight to find the hood latch. It's usually located near the center of the hood, behind the grille.
- Access the Latch:
- You may be able to reach the latch through the grille or by removing some plastic covers. Be careful not to damage anything.
- Manipulate the Latch:
- Use the metal rod or coat hanger to try and reach the latch. You might need to bend the rod into a hook shape to help you grab the latch.
- Once you've hooked the latch, gently pull it towards you. This should release the hood.
- Check for Obstructions:
- If the hood doesn't open, there might be an obstruction. Check for any ice, debris, or other objects that could be preventing the hood from lifting.
Additional Tips:
- Safety First: Wear gloves to protect your hands from sharp edges.
- Patience is Key: This process can be frustrating, so take your time and be careful.
- Consider Professional Help: If you're unable to open the hood yourself, call a roadside assistance service or a mechanic.
Regarding the clogged cowl drains: This is a separate issue that will need to be addressed once you can access the engine compartment. You can often clear them with compressed air or a gentle water flush.
IF it popped off at the actual latch you'll be cutting a hood, to cut the catch pin.... Ask me how I know
if it breaks from inside car just pull of drivers side wheel liner and wil long pliers pull the back
junction box really yards towards back of the car.
If it’s the latter you have to cut, I used a hand saw with a boroscope. Took long but was safer.
