Secondary Air Pump / Carbon Buildup in secondary air ports? P0491 & P0492
I took it to my mechanic and they said that my secondary air pump was bad and they replaced that they said it was a lot more work to get to the secondary air ports and clean them. They charged me about half what they originally quoted when they thought they needed to clean the secondary air ports.
Okay so I'm tempted to be ecstatic it was far less expensive than I thought it would be. But my question is does this check out? I'm thinking the carbon build up in the ports is likely what caused the secondary air pump to fail, by creating resistance to the air flow the air pump is trying to create. Is this logical or does what my mechanic says check out to you? I should mention I only got code P0492 and never P0491... 2015 Q5 3.0T 152k miles
I'm worried about having to do the job over and replace the air pump again as well as clean out the ports if my logic is correct..
