Default Q5 TDI Coolant issues

Are there any Q5 TDI coolant issues on this vehicle? Talked a friend into buying this vehicle and her mechanic told her there were issues.

Not that I know of. My Q5 TDI has 103,000 miles on it.

Ive had no issues with my '15 TDI. I did have the cooling system flushed recently but just as preventative maintenance. Love my stump puller.. i mean TDI.

EGR Coolant Bypass Valve and surrounding plastic pieces can fail. I had mine replaced at 97K miles under the dieselgate warranty (after some arguing). You may notice coolant loss but it builds up in the valley underneath the intake manifold. It can be found with an Inspection Camera.under a pressure test.

It's not always going to fail but if it does, the labor will take you a day or so.. The other issue I've had with my Q5 TDI is an AdBlue sensor failure, but it's been pretty solid otherwise.

Default Q5 Reservoir Hose Locking Mechanism Failure

At 90K, the lock mechanism failed at start up, dumping all coolant. Red advisory stop engine presented on dash. Result; the car towed to dealership for replacement of lock, hose and coolant top up.

Few things that are becoming more common on the 2014 TDI engines as they rack up miles over 150k.
1. EGR coolers can leak internally, this allows coolant to be sucked into the intake, and results in excessive steam/smoke from the tailpipes and coolant loss.
2. The plastic valve in the valley leaks, or cracks, resulting in coolant loss.
3. Coolant leaks from old o-rings at the oil cooler, and any other locations and plastic parts. (Replace that crap with billet alloy ones.)
4. Start up timing chain rattle. Mine only rattles sometimes, and not for more than 3 seconds. Usually when starting the engine warm, and as the oil has more than 3000 miles on it.

In my opinion, the second gen TDI is excellent. Never use the auto stop/start feature, it just wears out your engine from lots of no oil pressure starts. Delete the filters/cats ASAP. Same with the EGR. Good tune and you get 37mpg, over 300hp, nearly 500tq and change the transmission fluid and filter every 80k. New fuel filter at that same time. Cheap insurance and better performance.

Darkside makes the best downpipes I've seen, SusTDI makes an excellent EGR/Valve/plastic fitting delete kit using billet fittings, quality hoses/clamps etc. No more points of failure, or clogging up your intake with carbon from the EGR.
Another bonus is you can run whatever diesel oil you want, nothing to get clogged up, no DPF/Def B/S.

Interesting.. I get the timing chain rattle on cold start only and as with yours, it goes away very quickly, typically less than 1 second. My '15 TDI has just under 70K on it. Still love it! Knock on wood, no other troubles.

I would love to hear what you've done to yours. Who tuned yours after you did the delete?
