Default CZ: Middle brake light

Fellow experts

I have a strange problem with the middle brake light - it only works sometimes and as it wants, some days it lights up as it should and the next day it doesn't light up. How would I explain it.... Sometimes the Brems Licht comes on and the light stays on, but sometimes it just doesn't, I don't understand. The car was serviced and nothing was found

Other times it happens that the light only shines for one second and then goes out

Any fault codes? Most likely just bad light fitting. Might just be a loose or bad connector, but you’re most likely going to have to replace it. I’d get a used one from eBay as it’s not a high failure item, so used ones should be good. From memory I think it’s an easy job. Just pop out the parcel shelf grille to reveal the mounting screws and go from there.

Just the 3rd Brake light has this problem, or do they all do the same? Sounds like either the module that runs the brake lights (Central Convenience module J393, located above/behind the battery) is faulty, or you’ve got a short/corrosion in some wiring or connector that’s feeding voltage to the third brake light.

Has the car leaked at all? Random electrical behavior is more often than not due to water ingress somewhere.

Hi mate Thanks for writing back, I appreciate it. I don't have vcds (yet) I don't know what it is, when I go to work the light is on, when I leave work the light is off. It's constantly leaking somewhere in my car. So maybe that's it. It's constantly leaking into my car, it's making me nervous.

Water ingress will mechanically total the car if you don’t find and stop the leak asap. Where are you finding water collecting?

Common leaks are due to blocked sunroof drains, and blocked windshield plenum drains. Plenty of info out there on how to find and fix these.

hi mate

it's terrible, the whole passenger side and the back is wet, I don't know what I'm doing anymore, I bought a product for cleaning the channels and then watched how the water drains away...

when the car is on a gentle hill with the engine down, there is about two centimeters of water in the car

There are power control modules under the carpet in the passenger footwell that are now obviously water damaged. Until you fix the leak and dry it out, everything you are doing is a waste of time. Sunroof drains, plenum drains, AC condenser drains.

If you don’t know what you are doing, take it to someone who does.

Ours failed on our 2002 A4 a few years ago. Root cause turned out to be failed solder joints on the two square pins on the circuit board. Removal from our car was easy, but the unit is a sealed clear plastic module. Some people try to spit it open, but it doesn't come apart very easily. I just used my Dremel tool to cut a small section out of the housing that was big enough to get a soldering iron into - about a square inch or so. I could see the pins through the clear plastic. I soldered up the square pins, replaced the cutout section, sealing it in place with some black Gorilla tape. It's on the back side so it's not visible when installed. Also, I now have a nice little door that I can reopen if I ever have another problem with it. That was five or ten years ago, and so far I've never had a problem with it. This was a very easy repair and cost me almost nothing.
