Friends

I would like to ask you one trivial thing - but very important. When I measure the oil when it's cold, the oil is halfway up, when I measure the oil when it's hot, there are measu

ring lines on the bottom. I am attaching a picture for greater clarity

A mechanic said the car should be turned on for around thirty seconds before checking the oil level. Apparently the oil settles down into the sump when cold hence providing the impression of having more oil than when running around the engine. It is a V8 after all, and has more than 8 liters of oil inside.

If I saw the oil level in my A8 below the crosshatched area when it was hot, like the photo shows, I would add oil. At a minimum, I think the level needs to be within the crosshatch area anytime I check the oil.

Thank you for your reply. Yes, I added half a liter of oil (0.4l), in no case should there be too much oil. The oil should have hatching in the middle or preferably in the upper third. Personally I think if you look at my picture and the engine is hot it was low on oil

There is a chance the oil separator on the back of the engine is clogged and it holding oil when hot (it's been circulating for a while and building up in it). If you shut it off, it could be backed up in it and giving you a false sump reading. It then drains over a longer period of time.

I know where it is on my old D3 S8, and there was a local guy to me who had this problem, we took it off and cleaned it out and it fixed the problem. We used brake cleaner. I am not sure if it is the same on the A8.

Are you waiting at least 5mins after engine off to take the ‘hot’ measurement? Are you sure you’re pushing the dipstick all the way in?

Trying hard to resist replying to this, since it began.....

But if I didn't have such great self control, I'd say:

Just fill it up good! Any excess oil will just burn off, so there is no danger in over-filling. (Ignore the warning on the engine "NICHT OBERFILLIN", it's just some fever dream inspired krauts wanting to use their label makers).
