Default No tailgate lights

2014 Q5 2.0t Premium Plus. I have no tailgate lights, looks like the bumper mounted lights are on as a backup. Lots of posts online are pointing to the tailgate latch switch/sensor to be the issue. But, it seems the car can tell when the tailgate is open or closed based on the display on the dashboard. Any telltale signs of what might be causing this? Thanks.

Scan for codes, see what's there first. Work from that.

46 Central Convenience, I have these codes:

02914 rear lid closed sensor 1 G525 open circuit/short circuit to B+ (static)
02915 rear lid closed sensor 2 G526 open circuit/short circuit to B+ (static)
02912 right rear side marker lamp bulb M38 electrical malfunction in circuit (intermittent)
02911 left rear side marker lamp bulb M37 electrical malfunction in circuit (intermittent)
03123 terminal 30 2 open circuit (intermittent)
03124 terminal 30 3 open circuit (intermittent)
02771 left brake lamp/turn signal/tail lamp bulb M69 electrical malfunction in circuit (intermittent)
02772 right brake lamp/turn signal/tail lamp bulb M70 electrical malfunction in circuit (intermittent)
01518 left back-up lamp bulb M16 electrical malfunction in circuit (intermittent)
01519 right back-up lamp bulb M17 electrical malfunction in circuit (intermittent)
02919 unlocking fuel tank cap open circuit/short circuit to ground (static)
02615 locking fuel tank cap open circuit/short circuit to ground (static)

Does anyone have access to a wiring diagram? Next step would be to check fuses? Location?

That's a lot of codes. Two of them point to fuses. You might just want to unplug and replug all the connectors on the J393 (two or three 32-pin, two 17-pin), clear codes, see what comes back. The bulbs that are referenced there are the ones in the bumper, not on the lid. But you see the lid closed sensor open circuit errors; that's likely the basis of your operational error. But you say if you open/close the rear lid, the instrument cluster display correctly conveys when it is open vs when it is closed? The fuel filler door lock failing though is not uncommon. Replace the door lock actuator normally solves it, assuming it's not a connectivity issue.

Exactly, if I open/close the tailgate, the instrument cluster correctly displays this action so I know it is communicating correctly with the sensor (right?). This is what is puzzling me, and what I am trying to rule out.
