Default Oil Temperature Sensor

2006 A8L 4.2L engine. VCDS is giving me this code 16580 - Engine Oil Temp. Sensor (G8) P0196 - 004. However searching several Audi parts websites, nowhere am I finding a part number for an engine oil temp sensor. Also can find where it exist on the car. If anyone can shed some light on these two things, I am appreciative of the info.

Isn't that the oil pressure switch 06A-919-081-J you are after?

That may well be it. The description list "oil temp switch" as another name for this part number. Thank you, Do you know where it is on the car?

Take the belly plan off and you'll see a wire and electrical connector that go to the bottom of the oil pan. That is most likely what you are looking for. You can always disconnect the electrical connector and see if the code changes, if it does, you have the right sensor.

Thanks, but that is described as the "oil level sensor" but it's worth a try.

It is the oil level sensor, but there’s more to it than that. It’s actually a heated tip probe with temperature sensor, not a level sensor in the traditional sense.

The oil level is derived by the probe tip heating up, and then it measures how quickly the probe cools down once the heating is turned off. If it takes too long to cool down, it means the oil level is too low as the probe tip is above the oil level. If it cools down at the normal rate, it means the probe tip is submerged in oil and the level is ok.

It basically allows one very robust sensor with no moving parts to fulfill both roles. Oil temp and oil level. Smart.

Thanks Dave, Much better explanation than I got from any of the Audi online parts dealers. They either weren't knowledgeable or they didn't respond.
