Default AU: NEED some help with new pistons

Bought new set of piston for Q5, 2.0 TFSI, EA888 Gent 3.

Original piston is 82.420, just measured the compression ring, the gap is 0.4mm, it's nearly new condition.

The replacement piston is 82.455. is it ok to go ahead to replace it or just keep the old piston set?

the car only done 120K km.

Bore size is 82.5mm. I believe the piston to bore clearance can depend on factors like the piston coating but if it was me I would consult with a professional engine builder since this is one of the most critical considerations that your rebuild will depend on. The difference may seem small but it could be a problem. I opted to buy the new pistons from Audi, 06H-107-065-DM, to avoid this issue so you could always go that route. The old pistons/rings are crap so I personally would not put them back in. You could keep the old pistons and re-ring them but I found it easier to just replace the entire piston which comes ringed.

I just checked my new pistons from Audi and they are 82.455mm:

I also understand why the new piston is slightly bigger, 0.035mm, it's very loose with old pistons.

it's so easy to get oil into the chamber to burn when it's cold.

Yes that compression ring is different, which would make sense. Did you buy your new pistons from Audi or are they aftermarket? I didn't get a picture from that side of my piston to see the gap in the rings before I installed them. It also makes a lot of sense that they went to a slightly bigger piston so there's less blow-by in the first place. Great observations....
