Default Anyone with a good grasp of Kessy system layout ?

For sometime I have not been able to open any of the locked 4 doors or deck lid by touching door handles. My key battery is fine. And I can not lock the car with the pads on the door handles.

The VAGCOM says that the antenna in all 4 doors is not communicating. Then yesterday and today the system began functioning correctly, but only for one or two destinations and the accompanying lock/unlock cycle. Both days the system has worked on the first try after sitting locked over night.

What is the common link between the antennae that could produce that code, and which could randomly work or fail in such a fashion ?

Assuming you already have a proven good/strong battery, there is SSP 287 and 288 which explains the kessy system components and their operation. Search is your friend.

Have you physically checked your KESSY board?

From historical experience MMI and KESSY are the most common sources of gremlins of the A8.

These boards where built with no tolerance for moisture. The Kessy module underneath the driver's seat is easy enough to check.

I have not seen people replacing faulty components that communicate with the Kessy. If the issue is not the Kessy, that rabbit hole is deep.

Thanks for the reply ! Do you know the number of the module ? And when you say "under the seat' do you mean attached to the underside, or under the carpet ? If I can locate it, I will get a used module and swap it.

Mornin', Ed! SSP = Self Study Program. Here's a link to some in-depth info for our cars. I'm pretty sure you've seen these before, so maybe you ARE gettin' old! (me too ) but you're pretty cool for a geezer (said as someone who has hung out with the Awdinut several times)...

I don't think swapping a KESSY is a good idea because it interacts with all the protected modules, so one would have to reprogram either the KESSY to sync with them or all the modules! But that's IIRC, which CAN be a problem!

PS, the KESSY is under the carpet in the lowest possible water-retaining position in the car. Right when ya think these cars were wonderfully designed, ya discover THAT bit of planned obsolescence!!
PPS Agreed with Dart (MaxandTara) it is a deep rabbit hole!

If you start reading on pg. 78 of this one (SSP 287), it discusses the underseat unit J518 that I think everyone calls "KESSY', although here it is named "Entry and start authorisation control unit". Interestingly, the unit that controls touch recognition on the door handles (Convenience system central control unit J393) is far easier to access and I'd start there, in the trunk. Begins on page 80.

The swap is not that simple.... There are a number of posts on it here at Audiworld. There are a bunch of pictures of the Kessy module posted here. There is a long post about Kessy modules. "Storka" he is a guy from Australia who had dug deep into this. Google the search terms "Storka", "Kessy" and "carprog".

I was having issues with my steering lock and in researching my issue, found out that the steering lock cylinder, Kessy Module, and keys are tied together. If you change the Kessy module, all your keys and lock cylinder will have to be programed to your replacement Kessy Module if I remember correctly.

Audinut,

I asked Storka for the symptoms of a failing KESSY.

He said, "usually says arial fault and advanced key does not work"

Good Luck!
