Default Starter Relay Location

Hey dudes,

So I’m trying to swap out the starter relays (2 of them since I have push button start). But I’m going insane trying to find a diagram online or it’s location. Car is a facelift 09’ (4.2fsi).

I heard they behind the driver’s footwell. I’ve taken it apart but I can’t see where these would go. I’ve seen 381 and 645 numerations for them which doesn’t help my frustration. And all my car has is two 373 and one 370.

I also believe the locations might be different for pre-face and post-face.

Anyone that knows… I’d appreciate it

Thanks Dave, had to look for a bit. I guess I was wrong and all D3s have the starter relays (12v/40A no. 381 oem) on the PASSENGER’s side footwell. Behind the carpet. Had to drop the glovebox slightly to get the plastic footwell out of the way to pull the carpet back. Not too hard, but tedious if you don’t want to break anything

For anyone who’s interested in a little backstory, had intermittent starting problems for over a year or so. Sometimes the car fired right up, sometimes no crank but everything else on, battery voltage good etc. it would take up to 15 mins sometimes to get the car to turn over.

Anyone who knows D3s knows the horror of having to replace a starter. So I finally got sick of having the car do this, and went with the cheaper option first. Ordered both relays from EuropaParts.com.

I was really happy when I pulled the old 381s, one had a very high ohm measurement, the other one was totally shot. It’s a miracle the car could even start before lol. Swapped them… after the car had been sitting for over a week, BAM fired right up 1st try. Time for a beer, and to be grateful that that fixed it

I highly recommend anyone who starts having an issue like this to go with the relay replacement first. Some people have replaced the starter (yikes) and it isn’t the cause of the no crank issue.

Do you mean the OEM ones? They’re purple and are numbered 381 (numbering doesn’t really matter, so long as the pin arrangement is the same and they have the same voltage/amperage. These are 12V 40amp. Part no. 431951253G for the purples.

If you mean the ones from EuropaParts: here is the link: https://www.europaparts.com/relay-43...v0crh_jhzInloa

Purple ones that come from the factory look like this:

Sorry, I didn’t. They are behind the carpet in the passenger side footwell. I kinda explain how to get to them in my post above, basically you need to loosen the glove box just enough to pull out the door plastic at the bottom which will then let you pull the carpet back.

additionally my car had a black styrofoam pad which I had to pull out, they are right there. You will need a flashlight so you can see them.

No need to touch the glove box. Just yank out the door sill and kick panel trim piece. Then the carpet can just be folded back out the way, and the styrofoam filler piece pulled out to get the access you need. I put my mr12volt CarPlay interface up under that filler piece.
