Default LK: Audi starting once in a while

My 2008 3.6L Audi Q7 starts once in a while ( when fault codes reset with scanner starts sometimes and starts sometimes without any support from the scanner ) and I can’t figure out why so I’ve handed my car over to Onedrive ( Audi Agent in Sri Lanka ) and after a thorough scan they said that it was the fault in my “ Parking Position Sensor Unit “ and the “ Gear Selector Mechanism “ which I’m guessing they meant the Transmission Position Sensor and the Gear Selector on the center console but they also refused to give me part numbers so I’m confused on what parts to buy and where I could find the parts on the vehicle to obtain a part number.

any help regarding my problem will be much appreciated

I think "parking position sensor unit" may refer to the radar proximity sensors that would be equipped for use with the reverse camera system. Do you have parking sensors?

NO, there's a safety switch attached to the gear shifter that tells the car it is in PARK. If the switch fails or is loose, a no-start scenario is common. You mentioned fault codes, but not what fault codes are seen. Post those up too, but yeah, replacing the safety switch inside the shift console is not a difficult thing to do if you DIY. Videos online if you look.

i do have parking sensors but I don’t think it’s the issue with those I highly suspect it to be the transmission position sensor that they meant that comes on top of the gearbox

I was told to replace the whole gear shifter mechanism and the parking position sensor that sits on top of the gearbox and they wouldn’t give me any part numbers nor the fault codes so I’m just trying to figure out what part exactly I’m supposed to replace

What they told were the possibilities, and of course, they'd really like it if you paid them to do both. Of course, if you have fault codes that point to a specific issue that definitely helps in diagnosis, but sounds like the shop was just trying to separate you from some $$$$.

If you search online for this specific scenario, you'll find others who have already incurred fault codes linked to the shifter's (Park) safety switch/lockout.

Here's a thread asking a different question, but it's got fault codes linked to the same safety switch, so you can pull info/part #'s etc., from this thread, as well as compare to any fault codes your car has:

This is a situation where getting the fault codes is key. Here are the best two options on the market for code readers for VW/Audi products:

do your self a favour, and order yourself cheap chinese OBD2 reader, (elm327) for ew dollars, and download carista app or car scanner app for playstore and you can scan it yourself.

If u use android, you can even download cracked APK file and have them for free to try it out, and then buy full version to support developers
