Default Fumoto Oil Drain valve for Q7 3.0 TDI?

Anyone installed one of the Fumoto oil drain valve, F106 or F316 variants? Drain plus is very close to the crossmember, so interested in experiences pro or con.

Yes. I am not sure which one I installed, but I do have a Fumoto on mine, and I wish it would have been available from day 1!

edit: I just looked it up, and I installed a 106SX on mine. This one is very important because the solid (one piece) units do not work due to not being able to thread them on with the crossmember. Of course, if you are able to create another inch or so of clearance for the purposes of threading the one piece units, you can do that, but the SX is a two-piece that allows you to set the position of the drain and tighten it independently.

For those that use a vacuum system to change the oil via the dipstick, this is obviously a non-issue. However, the standard drain plug is very prone to leaking and requires a new crush washer with every oil change, so the Fumoto valve becomes a nice asset to have. In addition, you can attach a length of clear hose to it in order to route the oil out from above the undercarriage covers to save even more time.

I have a fumoto on mine. I took a hole saw and it has a small piece of fuel line attached. Easy to drain. I just let it drain for an hour or 2 and close it up.

Bought a 10L capacity vacuum pump from Harbor Freight (on-sale), and got an oil-extract tube/adapter set (Schwaben) to get a smaller diameter tube that will work with the Q7, and no problem getting all the old oil out. Changing the oil is an easy, topside only endeavor, and goes quick...no splash/rockguard panels to remove, etc. Just remember to remove oil cap on top so the oil flows freely up the vacuum tubing...easy & clean.

I can change the oil with my pneumatic extractor in ten minutes, including the beer, while wearing a suit and tie.

Why on earth would you want to muck with a Fumoto valve? You have to drop the pan, crawl underneath, splash hot oil on your favorite t shirt...

I used many Fumoto valves on four, five and six cylinder gas Audi engines, so I'm a big fan of them...where appropriate.

It's just too easy changing the oil and filter on this motor topside.

Mine is easy. Hole saw in the plastic, Small piece of fuel line and after 2 hours of being opened. Pretty much all oil is drained.

I have the Fumoto on the TDI as well. I do still pull the rear pan. Takes longer to get the thing up on ramps than it does for me to do the actual labor of draining the oil, pulling the old filter, installing the new o-ring and filter, closing the valve and installing the lock clip and then filling it back up from the two 5L jugs. I just did the oil and filter a couple weeks ago, I think I spent about 15 minutes of actual labor.

Another vote for the extractor. I never really "got" why a fumoto was necessary. Is it really that hard to pull the drain plug?

Once I started using the extractor on the Q7 (and tested results by pulling the plug afterwards the first time) I never went back. I also the extractor on the A6, because its filter is also located on top. For the other cars that you need to crawl under to get the filter, I just pull the plug.

The other benefit to the extractor is that the old oil is in the extractor and can be dumped out at the recycler. No dumping a drain pan into an old antifreeze jug to transport to recycling.

15 minutes, clean clothes, no mess.

If this was my only car, or only brand, I probably would use an extractor. As it is one of many, the extractor would just be another tool (and not a small one) taking up space.

The Fumoto was about $20, installed in lieu of the plug on the next oil change (no extra steps there!), and results in a very quick, clean, and controlled oil drain compared to puling a plug. As such, fully worth it.
