MMI screen stopped working
The monitor in this car is just that...a monitor, nothing special about it. The video feed is sent to the screen, and most typically video feed loss is linked to the MMI circuit board going bad...usually related to prior spills over the MMI area, which is just above this circuit board location. Do a little research and scan your car for faults...test the fiber optic network in the car (infotainment system), etc.
Of course, if you want to throw parts at it you can try that too.

Maybe I'll look for another shop.
Did you test the fiber-optic network for the MMI? The Ross-Tech VCDS VAGCOM does offer this diagnostic test.
Rather than focusing all your thoughts on just the display screen itself, you should do a hard-reset of the MMI system (a simple multi-button push sequence), and if that doesn't help or change anything, then proceed to testing your other MMI functions, buttons, etc. with attention to if anything 'normal' occurs (audio from selecting the radio/SAT/other sound input buttons, or the MMI button LED marker lights themselves lighting up when you press an MMI selector button, etc. Will it play audio from a CD inserted into dash, etc. If these other things aren't working, then it's telling you that the problem is most likely with the MMI circuit board, which is an extremely common failure item due to the proximity to water/soda/coffee spills onto the MMI console area, where this circuit board resides just a short distance below the MMI controller ****, etc.
I did a quick search online and there's a bunch of documents/articles/videos on this specific topic of a failed MMI screen, so all you really need to do is start with the basics and do a little bit of focused research if you want to identify/repair the underlying problem.
Before you buy anything, check out the known/common MMI failure issues. MMI board failures typically don't give you any fault code. There has also been a known issue for the wires to the MMI display screen becoming loose or abraded, leading to output failure of screen, etc.

Researching half of the internet is not an option for many reasons. One of them is that huge amount of similar issues may have completely different causes.
I can debug my PC, like reseat RAM sticks or disable pci device etc.
But I can't disassemble my car.
