MMI Module malfunction
I'm having a problem with the MMI module in my Q7. It doesn't recognize the SIM card when I insert it, and it takes about 5 minutes for the phone to connect via Bluetooth to the car. I reset the module several times and took the car to the Audi dealership, where they told me the module was faulty and the quote for a new one was €6,000.
I've considered buying a used MMI module and saw that few modules EXACTLY match the code that appears on mine, which shows the following information:
MIB2 Main-Unit
FCC ID: T8GA270
IC: 6434A-A270
4M0 035 035 D 0878
4M0 035 035 A 052
A787
The question I want to ask you is, when looking for another module, does it have to be EXACTLY the same, or is there some variation that is acceptable? And another question: I've heard that Audi, to prevent the sale of stolen car parts, doesn't allow these modules to be reprogrammed for any car other than the original one they were installed in. Does this sound true to you?
Thank you all so much in advance.
This is the module I have.
Your in the wrong forum for your MKII, 4M Q7...this is the MK1, 4L Q7 forum.
In general, I'd take what any Audi dealer (Stealer) tells you with a good bit of skepticism, as they don't normally troubleshoot anything; they just replace parts and control modules, as that is their business model. They've already smoked you for a big labor charge simply to scan your car for trouble codes; hooking up a scan tool. Could it be the control module/MIB2 head unit...possibly, but then why does you phone still connect to it, etc. Have you read the owner's manual? Have you turned off your cell phone's Bluetooth and also power-cycled your phone off/restarted it...it's just a computer, after all.
On SIM cards, I'd defer to the owner's manual on the MMI system to give you the correct parameters, but it also comes down to what exactly are you trying to do with your MMI? Don't buy parts to replace the MMI head unit unless you 100% know that is the issue, and there is no better, cheaper alternative, like simply updating the firmware for the MMI, etc. Do the research, or you'll just be throwing parts at a problem...like the Audi dealer does, but they do it intentionally to make money.
