Default FR: Annoying sounds in habitacle

Hi everyone,
there is an annoying sound in the front aeration duct (left side in my RHD model). It clicks when the road isn’t smooth, like some piece inside is loose, deep down.
My problem is that I don’t know how to access the deep part of the duct (already took off the front panel but the duct isn’t straight so the hand can’t go far inside).
Does anyone face the same issue and know how to check what’s wrong ?
I have been able to fix numerous habitacle noises but this one is a tough one to fix.
Thanks!

I'm inferring/translating that this is a noise you hear in the ventilation (HVAC system) air duct, right? A clicking type of noise usually means there's a blend door actuator that's stuck or failing. Sometimes you'll get an internal HVAC fault code for a bad actuator if you scan the car using VAGCOM type scan tool. If you are unaware of any problems with your HVAC controls system, you should simply manually cycle through all the different options giving each 5-10 seconds to change over between blend door positions, and do this both on cold and full hot temperature settings.

There is an HVAC test sequence you can run if you have Ross-Tech VCDS scan tool that cycles through the blend doors for you.

Also, have you checked/replaced your HVAC cabin filter lately? The HVAC blower fan can also make noises, and those are known to fail as well. It'd be a lot less likely you've got something actually rattling around inside the vent tubes unless you have small children that ride in the car, as kids do like to put things where they don't belong.

Many thanks, that sounds like a very high possibility. I will do the manual cycle as I don’t have any scan machine.

I was wondering if there is a reset procedure for the blend door HVAC. That may do the trick if it isn’t broken. Couldn’t find it for Q7…

Cheers

I'm not aware of any 'reset' procedure, but take heart that since it is a 'noise' you are only noticing under specific rough road conditions, it may just be something really super simple. I'd mute/turn-off the radio and do some test drives to focus on when the noise is present, and whether it is a repetitive, mechanical clicking sound as you would expect from those actuators, or if it's just something knocking around that has dropped between the console and seats, for example.

In my own Q7s, when lifting the seats for battery access, etc. I've run across the prior owner's pens, paper clips, coins, business cards, etc., etc. all rattling around on/ in a plastic piece located adjacent to the battery box, right next to the center console, but down by the base of the seat tracks, etc. It's kind of a 'catch-all' spot, and things can jiggle and make annoying noise depending on what they are and the road surface, etc.

Hi,
Thanks for your quick reply, let me have a go through the manual cycle.
This catch-all area you mention is amazing! German engineering at its peak! Large enough for small objects to fall, too narrow for fingers to slide through and inaccessible otherwise. But my sound issue is definitely in the duct.
Cheers
