Rear hatch open warning light
Start by open/close the gate manually at rear of car and observe below the strike plate (push it down) for any loose/broken bits plastic. If none, then close the gate and observe to see how it closes and whether the soft-closing mechanism is still functional, etc.
The safety switch itself, IIRC, can be accessed directly by pulling up the cargo cover over spare tire area, and it'll be right there by the latch with wire going to it. Pray it's the switch that's loose or busted rather than the soft-closer mechanism, although that's not terrible to replace either.
Once was after I had pulled off rear bumper valence to install tow receiver and simply forgot to plug in the little sensor connector, so that fixed that issue...an oversight on my part during reassembly.
Second time was stopped at a grocery store, loaded in groceries through rear hatch, pressed close button on gate and then boogied around to get in car as it was raining, started to drive off and the hatch open warning went off. That time I was having issue with the actual latch/locking mechanism inside the liftgate was being 'sticky' and it just needed some lubrication on that latch mechanism (mounted in the lift-gate), and all was well with the world again.
