Catastrophic driveshaft failure. What related parts need to be replaced?
I had it towed to a shop in the hopes that my warranty would cover the repairs. They denied the claim, stating that it looks like I ran over something.
I'm no stranger to mechanic work so i can fix it myself. The question I have is what parts (other that the obviously bent drive shaft) I need to replace.
Separated at rear differential
Bent drive shaft
Bent drive shaft
Not sure what these pats at called, but this is the transmission end
Looks pretty straightforward on the replacement - full driveshaft with center support bearing. Possibly the output shaft seal(s), if damaged at the transfer case or rear differential.
Can't tell from pics if the center support bearing still in place, but what normally happens is that support bearing fails, then the rear prop shaft gets to moving around , the grease seals by the support bearing fail next, then eventually the whole thing goes kaput and starts banging and making noise, but yours if the first I've seen to separate from the rear diff and turn into a pretzel.
Looks like a straightforward repair though. The Q7s w/8spd tranny got the redesigned rear prop shaft, which isn't quite as 'sturdy' as the ones the early Q7s got. Here's a thread focused on the common failure of this particular driveshaft:
