Audi Q7 Trunk and Gas Lid
In no specific order, I'd suggest you verify the easiest items or low-hanging-fruit first:
If you have access to a VAGCOM type scan tool, do a full diagnostic scan of the car to see what faults are stored/present inside the control modules; this can tell you a lot on an older Q7. More than likely there are some 'intermittent' fault codes stored that relate to this issue.
Car battery condition; this is also an item that shows up frequently in a full scan...low voltage type errors/faults. The Q7 will shut down systems if your battery is not sufficiently charged.
Key fob battery replaced? It's cheap, so if you can't remember last time you changed it, change it. The key fobs also have indicator LEDs on them that will flash differently to indicate communication problems with car, and if it doesn't flash when using remote buttons, well, that is the fob battery or internal fault with remote, etc. (CR2032 coin battery)
Lube the contact switches at doors, moving parts in trunk latch (on the gate itself), and also lube the fuel door release as those do eventually get sticky and fail to release (sometimes), until they finally just stop working.
Since your dome lights being lit or not are your 'key indicator', I'd probably look at the electrical switches and the battery voltage and reserve capacity (amp hours) available first. Lots of odd problems on a Q7 link back to the BEM system knowing your battery is weak. The scan of car will provide you a good baseline for diagnostics/further troubleshooting, and may outright show you the culprit. There will be lots of low voltage related fault codes if the battery is weak, for example.
Good luck!!
