Smelly tdi
If you smelling something truly funky, like dead animal/skunk spray, etc., then there's your answer.
If you referring specifically to the car's interior, then say so, etc. Be specific.
The two fluids that have a really strong odor are the hydraulic fluid/steering rack and the DEF, which is not very pleasant being ammonia based urea solution. Suggest you remove the cap on hydraulic fluid/power steering pump reservoir and get a good whiff to compare by. If that hydraulic fluid gets spilled or leaks on anything it stinks up the place pretty solid for a while. It stinks immensely straight out of the sealed bottle too...I changed out my dark steering fluid for fresh, but if anything it stank worse with the fresh hydraulic fluid, yup.
Still, when you use the words dead, rotten, stinky...that brings to my mind a dead rodent up in your cowling area beneath the windshield.
Good luck tracing the stink. Our TDIs have aborted regens due to short drives ending at the driveway, and the coolant fans running furiously after shutdown was the giveaway the regen cycle was running, but they never stank.
