3.0 TDI - timing chain condition
All you are really looking for is the camshaft bank 1 phase position, with engine running and already at normal operating temperature, etc., so you can go pull that up in the advanced measurement 'button' from your engine module.
The Gen 1 TDI 3.0 is a fairly rock-solid motor, and many of them can go 200 - 300k miles, if you keep the oil changed, before needing a new timing chain set. That said, it does have multiple timing chains & tensioners, and is relatively complex setup, etc. Oil dilution in North America market related to lower quality diesel fuel combined with the extended, standard oil change intervals negatively impact timing chain longevity, as well as the hydraulic chain tensioner's functionality.
The Gen 2 TDI 3.0 is completely revised engine design/construction, and this is lighter and has fewer timing chains, and a lot more plastic components on the motor, which makes it more likely to encounter issues as it ages, but not necessarily from timing chains. Same issues from combo of lower fuel quality and extended oil change intervals resulting in oil dilution, and deposits, which negatively impacts hydraulic tensioners, turbos, main bearings, etc., etc.
Use better fuel, use diesel additives, and change your TDI's oil based on how you actually drive it rather than Audi's once-size-fits-all 10k miles OCI reminder. You can very easily modify the OCI and service inspection intervals / reminders in VCDS or using OBD-eleven, etc.
