Default What's going to go next?

I have a 98 A4QM stock with just under 80,000 miles. Got the 75k service and they suggested an additional $2k of work including serpentine belt, timing belt, water pump, thermostat, and one tie rod end. Damn.

If I get all this fixed, what else is going to go in the next 50k miles?

Trying to figure out if I should put the money into it or think about a trade-in.

Default If you trade, there's no guarantee that the car you buy will not have a failure of some sort...

unless you buy a simple car like a Honda..

Default $2k is really not bad

for 'once in awhile' maintenance. Kind of depends how reliable your car has been to date, if you've been constantly dumping money into it.

Truth is anything can fail...at any time.

If you like the car, pay for the maintenance - cost of 'doing business' with any car.

If you've been wanting a different car or are in a different $ situation, you may want to trade it in.

Default Look at it this way, those are all things have to be replaced at some point...

regardless of the brand of vehicle. It's all good maitenence and will help prevent having a breakdown that could cause you even more of a headache!

The $2k right now I'm not that worried about. But I'm just curious what other significant things I might be repairing in the next 50k miles.

If I'm going to be putting another $2k+ into it every year from now on, then it might be worth spending that money on something with lower miles still under a waranty of some sort.

Default You are confusing repairs with maintenance.

Repairs are for things that break. Maintenance is required for any car and timing belt replacement is expected on most cars (even a honda).

Look for a good independent shop if you are not interested in doing repairs yourself.Probably 30% cheaper.
