Default Crap, upper control arm bolts are frozen solid :-(

I was planning to replace my front shocks this weekend, but that bolt at the top of the wheel bearing housing (the one that clamps the control arm ball joints) is frozen solid. The nut came off without too much trouble, but that bolt is determine to stay put despite penetrating oil (I can't even turn it with a wrench).

Default Many tails of suffering and woe are associated with that bolt. I once spent an hour drilling it out

use anti-sieze when you put the new one in.

Default don;t take it out if you only doing shocks...just remove the two 13mm nuts

under the plugs in the engine bay. remove the bottom bolt and pull the shock/spring out.

Default That'd be easier.

Bentley said to unhook the upper arms so I figured you had to in order to pull the shock assembly out. If it clears with the arms in place, that maybe this isn't a lost weekend after all. :-)

Yeah, Bentley (and many tech articles) neglect to warn you about this...

Default To force the lower control arm further down?

Won't that put stress on the lower arm ball joints? Service manual says to support the lower arm to avoid excessive travel and damage to the joints.

Default Might be and issue with the suspension travelling down too far

The ball joints and rubber bushings are designed for a specific range of movement, so pushing the arms down beyond where they'd be with the shock fully extended might be problematic. I assume that's why Bentley states that the lower arms have to be supported with the shock removed to keep them from moving to far down.
