Smoking engine compartment 1.8T....
I was driving my car normal not really pushing it... but i was going up a steep mountain (mt soledad) for those san diego peeps, anyways my girl was doing a number on me and i look and there was smoke comming out of the right front fender and under the engine compartment. Pop the hood and its coming from the rear engine compartment next to the battery and on the left next to the air box. I have no idea what it is becuz the smell of the smoke is nothing iv'e ever smelt before... No cel or any lights all gauges normal. car runs fine turbo spools up. if i didnt see smoke i would'nt have know anything was wrong... Any ideas

Funny you mention that...I had a same small amount of smoke after at Mt. Palomar run...
From the same area you describe however I was a WOT run in many spots. Never did figure out what it was and it never happened again. Didn't seem to affect performance in any way.

I dont think the turbo is burning oil checked that no smoke from there...
The smoke was comming from the back of the compartment next to battery...When i pulled into my garage and poped da hood i didnt see smoke but i went up stairs and waited for car to cool i came back and garage smelled of that nasty smoke...

might be coolant leaking out from the rear of the engine where the temp sensor is
Mine is leaking as well, although it isn't enough to cause smoke. However when my turbo coolant supply hose burst, I saw steam/smoke. Check for coolant around the back of the engine.

Maybe..
After an autocross the sheet metal/fire wall around the cat and turbo were dripping some liquid onto the cat causing a small amount of smoke. I asked about this on the forum and was told it was cosmoline that was applied to the car to protect it from rust during shipment. So when I heated the sheet metal up from autocrossing the cosmoline melted and ran out from the inside of the sheet metal.
