Default I've had cars break, but I've never had one break like this.

So I'm on my way home from work yesterday afternoon and i hear this bang under the car that sounds like i hit a plastic bottle or something. so i pull right over and have no power steering. im thinking ok, the belt broke, no problem. Wrong. I open up the hood and sure enough the belt came off but its not broken. i look a bit closer and see all kinds of wires wrapped around the fan. so i look over by the power steering fluid resovior and see all of the connectors in the pic below ripped apart (ignore the arrow and the hand, i borrowed the pic from another post), plus what i think was the ambient air temp sensor and the wiring for the auxilliary fan. i have no idea how the wires got snagged in there but i will find out how much it costs to fix. FUN.

Default did the tensioner break? I can't see how the belt could have just snagged those things...

with proper tension.

i think what happened was the wiring got caught in the fan and got wound so tight that the fan stopped spinning. from there im guessing the belt fell off cause of all the friction between the belt and the pulley on the fan that wasnt spinning.

Default The last person who did a TB on the car neglected to clip the wire harness back onto the fan shroud.

I have seen it a fw times, but mostly it is the hood alarm that gets hit.

Default The kicker is there was a piece of duct tape under the coilpack

that was probably holding the wires up. it was about 95 degrees in boston yesterday and the tape probably let go. Whoever owned this before me was a hack...

Default did you have any major work done like the timing belt? If so, maybe the mechanic was sloppy and

left all those connectors dangling from their cradle. Eventually, they got snagged by the fan and wrapped around the belt. In any case, that sux, but a good mechanic or technician should be able to wire it back up.
