Engine cuts out occasionally

Default Engine cuts out occasionally

Every once in a while the engine on my 1.6l A4 B5 cuts out when stopping, this is at the point that the clutch is fully pressed down. Sometimes the revs drop very low (under 200) when braking and the clutch is fully pressed but then come back up to a proper idle level, most of the time the revs dont drop below idle but every so often the revs just drop to the point when engine cuts out.

It only seems to happen when the clutch is pressed down for 2 or more seconds (typically stopping) so theres no problem shifting up and down gears, but I'm worried this problem could get worse.

This has also only ever happened when the engine oil level is warmed up.

I though it might have something to do with the fuel injection system but I've been told that if it was this it would happen much more frequently.

Anyone had a similar experience or any ideas on what the cause could be?

Default Ireland actually!

But its my first car (1.6L '99 A4) and I'm still on a learners licence. In Ireland its very expensive or almost impossible for a new driver to get insured on anything over 1.6l.

Default my mother had the same thing with her 1.8, garage replaced the MAF

perhaps they did some cleaning or other non-replacement work, because new MAF and work were the only items on the bill.

The car would also be hard to start sometimes, after cranking for some time it would smell of petrol, the explanation we got was that the MAF said there was a lot of air getting in, so the computer poured in more petrol to maintain the correct ratio.

Europe got: 1.6, 1.8, 1.8T, 2.4, 2.6 (very rare, 150 hp like the 1.8T), 2.8, 1.9TDI, 2.5TDI

Default Ahhh, niffty. That's really interesting how they limit the size of the enigne while you are

in "learning" status. Wish the US would do that. A 16 YO could drive a V10 no problem and even get insured if the parents are rich enough.

Default Here in Norway they can't deny basic insurance as long as you pay the bill...

they can (and will!) deny coverage beyond the minimum liability insurance required for a car to be road legal. They will also crank up the price on fast cars, so an 18-year old will pay more for liability insurance on his old 200 turbo quattro than a 50-year old pays for full coverage on his shiny new RS6.

The only legal reason to deny insurance outright is if the client has really awful credit history, ie a number of failed payments and repossessions, or a conviction for insurance scam.
