Default Do I need a new Oil Pan?

So apparently the threading for my oil drain plug has been stripped (I've been changing my oil for YEARS and have never had problems so don't ask how I managed). Long story short, I have a pretty significant "drip". Any easy solutions or do I have to have the oil pan replaced?

Default Get a real drain plug. One that's threaded all the way to the head, unlike that crap Audi uses

rockauto.com, search for part# N90660601. That's what I used when my inner pan threads finally stripped. It's probably only about half the threads that are stripped on the pan. Use teflon tape every time you install the plug and DON'T overtighten it.

Default Nice, I am having a very slight drip problem...

I'll order one in. Rockauto also has the "Big Kahuna" filters, cheapest price on the net the last time I checked.

Default I tried that first and I wasn't sure if it was allowing all the oil to drain, so I removed it

when I did remove it, only an extremely small amount of oil was left. I think the missing oil I noticed was from very small valve cover leaks that never left drops, plus whatever gets stuck to the drain pan and caught in the filter adds up. Be warned, you'll need to remove the turbo oil return line to install the Fumoto valve if you have the smaller 14mm drain plug, so have a gasket ready.

Default A new pan is not the worst thing...

It's not a hard job at all. It's a bit more involved on the 1.8 than the 2.8, though. It's kind of like changing a valve cover gasket.

Sure, you could get it re-threaded, get a bigger bolt, use teflon tape... and you might be fine for years. I'd get a new pan if I was you, but that's just my opinion.

Dropping the pan also gives you an excuse to make sure you don't have any loose pieces of silicone gasket-maker, or gunk clogging the oil pump screen
