AVS dB review
Well a 235/45-17 AVS dB does fit the 17x7.5 Avus rim and it does fit my car without rubbing (just). I was worried because I have the Eibach Pro kit and the dB tires are obviously larger than the 040. The difference is more like 20mm than 10mm.
The first thing that you notice or rather don't notice with these tires is tire noise. They are very quiet. The ride is great; more like a Grand Touring tire than a performance tire.
As for handling. I took them to an empty parking lot I know and set up some cones. After a few runs to scrub off the surface they went fairly well. They do not turn in as crisply as a full on performance tire but then they are not one. They seem to be fairly progressive with regard to break away but their ultimate grip is less than ultimate.
I would say that they are a very quiet, surprisingly comfortable, nice predictable handling tire with very good limits. Not in the same class as the S02 (which I have driven) or other such tires but much better than a GT tire like the Turanza Revo (which I have driven). I would not recommend them for the track, but then I think that track tires are what one should use there.
We shall see how the "all season" aspect does in the snow.

Nice review of the school...
How did you like turn 2? It takes some getting use to doesn't it. Nothing like accelerating down that hill and then turning 120 degrees and on to the up hill. Lots of fun but it sure eats tires.
As for where I was; I was racing etchells that weekend. Had I known it was going to rain I would have done the school. I will do it again next year.

The 040's have a little crisper turn in, as for most other comparisons ...
I don't think I can be too certain as my 040's were nearly bald when they came off. At that point they were very sticky but much louder than the dBs. The dB's are also much better in the rain than the 040s ever were. And they are not quiet so much as nearly silent. I would say that the dB may be the perfect tire for general driving in the S4. If you want to go for all out performance get the S-02 pole positions IMO they are the finest performance tire out there. For the track I think the Pirelli P Zero C is a very nice tire. But I think you can only get them in Europe and Canada.
