Default Winter: Michelin Pilot Alpin or Pirelli Winter 210 SnowSport ? (225/45-17, factory wheels on S4)

I am in Pennsylvania, but I will travel across the State, and into New York, etc, during the winter.
Any thoughts on which of these two winter tires is preferrable? I think the Pirellis were highly thought of by some, however they are also more expensive than the Michelins. Are the Michelins equally good when the roads are clear and dry?
Thanks in advance for your help.
S4elvis

Default I think Eddie just talked me into the new Bridgestone LM-22s for my A6 4.2 instead of Pilot Alpins..

I live in western Oregon (read: rain), but frequently cross the Cascades to central Oregon (read: snow and packed snow) to get to our little get away shack. It is H rated as the Pilot Alpins are. You should also look at these. They are all good, and when combined with quattro, will be great.

Default Any of the above

They're all good. I have 205/55-16 Pirelli 210's on my S4. I commute from sunny Southern California to the snowy Sierras every week during the winter.

The Pirellis are very good in the snow, and acceptable on dry or wet roads. Obviously some performance sacrifice compared to wider 17" tires, but a reasonable price to pay for the additional security in bad weather.

I'd take any of the tires mentioned in this thread without a moment's hesitation. I bought Pirellis because they were a package deal with my wheels (thanks, Gary@Ronal) and I'm happy with them, but I think picking one of these tires above the others would be a matter of splitting hairs.

Default It depends....

It depends on what you are seeing more of. I say
basically the easiest way to decide is this:

More often than not, roads are dry/clear- go Pirellis for more performance/dry handling.

More often than not, roads are clear, yet you see a lot of icy/freezing & snowfall too, go Blizzak LM22s.

More often than not, roads are clear, yet you see a some icy/freezing & snowfall too, and dont need the absolute highest levels of dry handling, go Pilot Alpins.

I can help to finalize the selections & make sure it is the best for what you will be seeing when you call me to discuss further-you can reach me at 800.428.8355, ext 369.

Hope this heps!

Where do the Dunlop Winter Sport M2's fit in this line-up?

Default I had my Pilot Alpins last winter and they were great

in all conditions.

Ride: Very comfortable and quiet

Snow: Hit accelerator and go. No funny business.
Quattro accounts for much of that but the tire handled as well as the tires on my AWD SUV.

Icy/Wet: Great. I was/felt always in control.

Dry: Very good. Improvement over the OEM conti's.

That is just my opinion. The tire is a winner in my book for the best at doing it all. We had a couple significant snowfalls and several trips to the White Mountains with these tires peforming flawlessly. I hope this year is a repeat performance.
00 2.7T
