Will 225 look funny on an 8.5 wheel? Should I go with 235 instead?

go 235 -- 225 is too narrow.
you can probably stretch a 225 on an 8.5 inch rim, but it's not a good idea. i had 235's on 8.5's and even that was a stretch. if you can fit wider (e.g., you have an a6), then i'd put 245's or 255's on them.

I have the highest respect for Rich. He is a true auto enthusiast, and quite knowledgable about a plethora of subjects. Not to mention he is a great guy. And I respect his decision to put 225's on 8.5" wide wheels.
That said, personally, I think the wheels require 235 tires. The rims stick out too far, and the tread of the tire is narrower than the rim.
225 is good for 7-8" wheels. I think that 8.5" wheels want wider tires.

and I prefer the wider look. They do stick out... but only slightly (3mm).
I'd be araid of rubbing with the 235's.
Either way, they stick like glue and the ride is comfortable.
