Default Winter Tire Shootout

I live/work in Denver, but drive in the mountains quite a bit. Given that, I'm trying to get a good compromise between good snow/ice performance and good dry pavement performance. I'm planning on staying with 16" wheels. I've seen some good writeups on the Dunlop M2s and the Hak 1's, but I'm curious about the Toyo Observe and Michelin Alpin's. I'm discounting the Pirelli A210's because I'm thinking (perhaps mistakenly?) that they stress dry pavement performance too much for my needs. Thanks for any info/feedback on the above.

Default I might be able to give you a comparison soon.

I live in Evergreen and commute to Denver. After talking to Eddie at Tirerack, am putting Pirelli Winter 210 Snowsports in 16" on the car I commute in (an UrS4), and LM-22s in 16" on my ski car (UrS6 Avant). I figure the LM-22s will have better snow/ice performance, and Pirellis better dry road performance. Don't know anything about the Dunlops or Haks, but assume the Bridgestones will have better snow performance than either, and better than the Pilot Alpins (don't know about the Artic Alpins). I also understand the Pirellis might best either Alpin model in dry conditions. Doubt you could go very far wrong with any performance snow tire choice.

Default Agree about Pirelli's

I have 210 Assimetrico's on my S4, used for commuting from Southern California to the Sierra's. If I lived closer, or in actual snow country, I'd want a more aggressive snow tire. I agree they're not the best choice for your needs.

Personally, I'd look at the Hakka 1 or Hakka Q. I've had great experiences with Hakka tires in the past.

Default Re: Pilot Alpins work for me (a little long)

Pilot Alpins give up some grip on ice (compared to Dunlop Graspic HS2) and dry pavement (compared to SP8000s), and work VERY well in snow. I run Dunlop HS2 on my Toyota Supra in the winter. By comparison, the HS2s offer more grip on ice (necessary to even move the Supra away from a stoplight) than the Pilot Alpins but I could burn 'em down in 15 minutes of agressive driving on dry pavement. With quattro, I don't need the same advantage on ice that my Supra requires, so I went for the better compromise.
