Default Reviews of Dunlop SP 5000 at www.carreview.com

A lot of people have suggested this tire as a pretty good performance all season. There are a bunch of interesting consumer reviews of this tire at www.carrreview.com. Bottom line seems to be that the tire is good value, quiet and smooth, good wet grip and decent in slush, but not a "performance tire" , more of a squishy touring tire. Based on the reviews, I suspect that if you're used to the stock SP 8000Es the SP 5000s might be a disappointment and that the way to go is to alternate dedicated winter tires and performance summer tires if you live in a place that could get cold and snowy.

Default Interesting, but . . .

. . . I wish each reviewer would state the size of their tires! There are two versions of this tire (symetrical and asymetrical), and many size/profile configurations. I suspect, reading between the lines of the reviews, that some of the posters had relatively small-diamater, narrow, higher-profile versions, with more "squiggle" than would be true on larger-diamater, lower-profile versions.

Default I agree with the review comments...

I just mounted a set of asymetric Dunlop SP5000 205/55R16 tires. I do not like them at all. They're a hair noisier than the OEM SP8000E, ride much harsher and don't handle nearly as well. There is defintely a lot of squirm when going through the twisites.

Additionally, they don't have a wheel guard. This is a personal preference, but I think the wheel guard makes the tire look better, and obviously it helps protect the wheels for those of you that have to parallel park.

When spring comes around, I will definitely switch back to a dedicated ultra-high performance summer tire.

Default Hmmm. . . .

A lot of people have these tires and love them. The larger sizes do have wheel guards (to quote the Dunlop website, "Max Flange Shield (MFS) rim protector ribs help protect alloy wheels from curb damage"). I get the feeling that these tires perform much better if they are 17" or larger, 225/50 or wider/lower aspect ratio.
