Winter Tire Questions...
The tires will be for winter use around the Seattle area, so they will see lots of wet and dry use, with weekend runs up to the mountains for skiing where there will be plenty of snow, ice, and slush. Any thoughts on how these three tires compare to one another?
Eddie recommends the LM-22 quite highly, even over the Pirelli and Michelins, but I'm just a little leary of Bridgestones.
not really fond of Bridgestone Tires for some reason). </i>
Really no valid reason for you thought on that. Bridgestone has long had the winter tire technology to beat, and this latet version is no exception (having driven on them on our slide & drive last week).
Let me know what you think!
Thanks
Eddie
Last year I used a 205/50/17 mounted on the stock S4 wheels. This size worked great, but left a lot of rim exposed. I nicked them more then once just on pavement changes. This year I went with the stock size, 225/45/17. It might not be AS good in heavy snow/slush, but the size should work much better in the dry and just as good on hard pack.
As for other tires. The Michelins should be right on par with the Pirellis. I don't know much about the LM-22s. I stayed away only because in the past Bridgestone winter tires have worn out too quickly. We're 80% dry in the winter here in Denver, so I want a tire that can handle in the dry and won't burn up when the roads dry out. The LM-22s are supposed to be much better though...
Hope this helps,
Rick
98.5 Avant QMS
01 S4 Avant on order
They are new tires on the market, being out for (I think) one year.
I used four on my 1999.5 TQMS last year here in Alaska and was happy. Will be putting them on again in another month.
If you do a search for BFG Winter Slaloms in both the Tire and A4 forums you'll find detailed comments from me on the tires.
