New tire....should it be shaved?
I had to replace a tire (225/45/17 Potenza RE 730) the other day. The car is a 97 1.8t quattro - the existing 3 tires have a little over half their useful tread left. Am I going to gradually destroy any of the quattro internals by not replacing the tire on the other side? Do shops still shave tires? One local shop said I was okay and that shaving wasn't recommended. Any advice?

I would just....
...buy another tire, and keep the old one as a back up incase something happens to the others. You'll have two matched tires at that point, and will only have to buy two new ones when the time comes. It's the old addage...ya can pays me now, or pays me later, but you gonna pays me.
