Default 7.5" vs 8".....

If the reecommended tire size for both is 225 45 17, why would we want the 8" width?... isn't it just more weight and a less protected wheel?

Thanks from a "Wheel novice"

Default from a technical standpoint...

one advantage of having a wider rim is that the tire gets stretched on it more (doesn't look like a fat balloon when looking at it from the front or rear of the car), and hence there is less sidewall flex when turning. And less sidewall flex = better steering response.

Now, the difference between 7.5 and 8 is so small that I don't think you'd notice any difference in real life.

Default Yes they probably weigh more, but more importantly, they look awesome...

The wider wheel is a more aggressive look, and makes the car look alot nicer. It pushes the edge of the tire/wheel right to the edge of the fender. Much happier with my summer rubber which is 8" wide versus my winter stock avus wheels which are 7.5" wide.
