Default Muscle car tires

I'm looking for new tires for my 71 Cutlass. I've basically narrowed it down to a BF Goodrich and a Cooper tire. Does anyone have anything good or bad to say about either of these tires? Got something else you highly recommend instead?

Cooper Cobra Radial G/T
- P225/70R14 98T
- UTQG 440 A B
- 26.27" overall dia.

BFGoodrich Radial T/A
- P225/70R14 98S
- UTQG 400 A B
- 26.5" overall dia.

Default I've got the BFG Radial T/A on my '70 Cutlass -- pretty common for those cars....

Same size you quote. I've had them on for about 15 years without any problems. Rides/handles fine.

Goodyear used to make an Eagle ST that was pretty popular with the muscle car crowd -- not sure if they still make it.

What, you don't want the Polyglass GT's?!?

I'm actually thinking about giving in and getting a set of 16" Torq Thrust II's for it -- been a supporter of the original look for a long time, though.

Default It had bias-ply's on it when I bought it

The original spare was in the trunk! This was in 1993.

No I don't want Polyglass tires. The handling was horrible!

:-)

Thanks for the input. I knew the Goodrich tires were popular, but the Cooper looks like a worthy competitor. At least on paper.

Default Do you know if that Cooper is the same as the Cooper Cobra they had back around 1990?

If so, My wife ran through 2 sets on a Fiero. We liked the tires -- no trouble at all, except one puncture that turned out to be a table knife that ended up inside the tire, lol.

I guess I'd probably have to endorse both. IIRC the font is even similar on the white lettering.

When I bought my Cutlass back in 1985, it had Cordovan "Grand Am Radial GT"'s on it -- pretty cheesy.

Do you do any OCA events with your '71?

I suppose we need to toss some Audi content in here somewhere, so I've got Falken Ziex on my A4

Default I have no idea

My car has been on Michelin white walls for about ten years. There's plenty of tread left; I'm just thinking it's time for something new. And I like the idea of raised white letter tires.

I compared the Cooper and Goodrich tires (both web sites offer a blown up view) and they are very similar looking. I might just go with the Cooper unless my tire salesman talks me out of it. He'll get my business either way.

I did OCA events for a few years. The local group (near Washington DC) is called the Capital City Rockets. I let that membership die out a few years ago. Nice people but I just didn't get much enjoyment out of the club.

I drove to the Olds Centennial in Lansing in 1997. That was pretty cool. Spent 3 or 4 days there. Took lots of pictures and bought a video that someone made of all the cars there. After that my participation dropped off.

A local town called Vienna has a Halloween parade every year and I drive in that. I let the parade committee put a dignitary in my car. I don't really care who it is I just like to drive in the parade. I get lots of compliments on the car and we dress up in costumes. It sounds goofy but it's fun. Last year my girlfriend and I were X-Men (Wolverine and Storm). The kids watching the parade loved us!

Where are you located?

Default I'm in Cleveland now.

But I grew up in Michigan ~40 miles SE of Lansing. In between, I was in Georgia for 9 years. My OCA membership lapsed about the same time your's did. My last OCA national meet was in Columbus, OH in 1990. I showed it fairly consistently for the first 5 years after my Dad and I resored it. Between '90 and '95 I didn't have a good place to store it, so it sat in my parents driveway uncovered. As a result, it's starting to show it's age a bit -- but still looks great from 20' I just take it to cruises now, still a pleaser to me. I've been searching for the time and place to get it refinished -- probably in the next 5 years. I have a 455 that I'm thinking about putting in it this time around, and I'm going to try to find a W-30 hood/intake for it. Somehow, when given the option, I've been spending more money on my AUDI though. I'll email you a picture of my car.

Regards!
