Default Questions about my tire purchase from the classifieds

I recently purchased a full set of Goodyear F1's from a private party as advertised on Audiworld's classifieds. The seller stated that they were next to new, as they were taken off shortly after the car was purchased new and replaced with 19" wheels and tires.

I had them mounted on my RS4 replicas over the weekend, and the technician noted that the left rear has a small bulge on the inside sidewall, and I might notice some vibration.

To make a long story short, I do get some vibration above 70 mph. Goodyear won't replace the tire, says that sidewall bulges are due to an impact. He quoted me a price of $226 mounted and balanced to replace it.

1. Would I be reasonable in requesting the seller to refund a portion of the purchase price?

2. How safe is the tire to drive on?

3. Gary, is there a discount I can request from tirerack.com? (tire is 225-40/18)

Default Some thoughts

1. Not Gary's issues - and he does not moderate private sales.
2. Tirerack prices are discounted - you can check them on the website
3. You should contact the seller.
4. I would not drive on it.

I sold my wheels and tires local - because I did not want to get into issues like this - I wanted my buyers to see what they were purchasing. Lesson - Internet sales have risk.

Default Re: Some thoughts

Thanks for your thoughts:

1. I fully understand that, I'm asking the forum's opinion (Gary is encouraged to respond tho)
2. yup, $173 + shipping. Just was asking if there is an AW code for further discounts.
3. I did
4. For now, I have to. I'll be ordering a new tire on payday

Even if I had viewed the tires locally before purchase, the bulge would not have become evident until installed and aired up. I took the risk and understood what I was doing. Still, with replacing the one bad tire out of pocket, I'll come out a couple hundred dollars ahead.

Default Glad you got such a good deal.

If the bulge was inside - the owner may not have known about it.

Gary has posted before - there are no special discounts for AWers.

Default I did drive on a small bulge for about two months....

I was a bit nervous about it, but I have a brother in law who (unknowingly) drove on two bulged tires for over six months without a problem. I really had no excuse after the first week, because I bought a new one and had it in my trunk waiting to make it to the tire store.

That said, I didn't let my wife drive the car with the bulge and I'm sure it's not recommended.

You definately should contact the seller about it and try to get some money back, but he might not have known about it (especially if it was on the inside), mine was really tough to see.

Default Thanks, I'm pretty sure he didn't know

as the buldge is on the inside. I've emailed him (over 24 hours ago) but no reply. I'm not surprised!

Anyway, I'm going to order a replacement next week.... gotta wait until payday.
