Default 18x9 revisited

hello all, i have read some things on here about the 18x9 rims not working on the audi. i purchase some rondells that have been pictured in a previous posting. I bought them after speaking to a person @ llteck on some of their 9x rims they have listed in catolog. they told me 18x9 will work on A6 2.8 but yet all here say they wont clear. i want to get this cleared up before i buy tires, and if some of you know they will work what size tire do i need to use. thanks hope we get the questioned cleared up. i didnt buy the rondells from llteck just asked them about their 9 inch rims w. et35 same as i bought.

Default The bad news: You will NOT get a clear answer on this.

This question comes up about once a week. I've seen people insist that you can put 255 tires (appropriate for a 9" rim width) on a narrow body A6 (2.8/3.0/2.7T). Others have said that they get rubbing when running 245s. Obviously, the offset matters here but who wants to have an offset so high your tires stick out beyond the wheel wells? T R A C T O R!

Tirerack says you can't go wider than 235 which is more appropriate to an 8" rim width. If you want to play it safe, stick with 8" rims on a narrow body.

well I have already purchased the wheels. Sooooo i wanted to get a concrete answer before I also buy tires and to know what size will work the best. So are you saying that the 9" wheel no matter the tire size will stick way out like a tractor on the 2.8 A6 why would LLTECK even offer a 9"wide wheel also for the 2.8 A6 and others if its not correct?

Default Because they want your money. People DO do this...

...sometimes using spacers. The question is whether or not you want to.

I've seen SO many different answers on this same question that I will not even attempt to be definitive on this. All I know is that I'm running 235/45R17s on my narrow body A6 and that's as wide as Tirerack recommends. Those tires are sitting on 17x8" wheels. Based on myfitment, I could not imagine getting those that same width on a 9" rim. You could probably get 245s (certainly 255s) but some people report rubbing with that size.

One thing to note: I have the sport suspension. If you do not, your car rides a bit higher and you may have more options. The flip side on this issue is that you may very well want to lower your car if you have not already. An 18" wheel is going to accentuate the large wheel gap non-lowered A6es have.

Good luck. Sorry I can't provide more definitive answers. I'd give the folks at Tirerack a call to see what they'd recommend. Ask for Gary -- knows his way around Audi's better than anybody.
