Scary tire problem...need advice ASAP
Anywho, I drove to Costco (only about 2 miles) to see what they had. They've got the Mich Pilot Sport A/S for about $800 mounted in stock, and the BFG g-Force T/A KDWS for about $600, though they won't be in until the 17th most likely. I'd rather go with the BFG's for cost reasons, but I need to drive up to Baltimore on Thursday and again on Sunday probably (about 40 mi each way, and I probably need to twice). The spare is brand new, but I know its bad to run tires with very different tread depths. Looking into Pirelli Nero's from TireRack, which will be about $700 by the time I get them mounted (though may be able to do that quicker than waiting on the BFG's from Costco).
I don't need to drive on a daily basis, so it's not a problem letting her sit for a few days, but I don't feel very safe driving any sort of distances as things are now. Any recommendations? I have a feeling I should cough up the 800 for the Michelins and piece of mind, but is it safe to put the spare on temporarily while I wait for other tires to come in? Also, is this the sign of a more serious problem then improper tire pressure/or a bad alignment?
Thanks guys!!!
The 2nd pic is out of focus.
The 3rd pic I can't see the inner shoulder because of the shadow.
From what I can see in these pics, they look OK.
Get a clearer shot of the problem and re-post.
I ordered my General Exclaim UHP from Tire Rack, because of this survey.
So far, I like the General's.
O, by the way, they were $73.00 each for 225/45ZR-17's.<ul><li><a href="http://www.tirerack.com/a.jsp?a=AR4&url=%2Ftires%2Fsurveyresults%2Fsur veydisplay.jsp%3Ftype%3DUHP">http://www.tirerack.com/tires/surveyresults/surveydisplay.jsp?type=UHP</a></li></ul>
and the pass rear for comparison. Both rears are fine!

From what I can see you have other problems to figure out before you put on a set of new tires. The damage is either:
1. Severe misalignment or damaged suspension component(s). A shop can check and correct.
2. Rubbing of the tire edge due to over size tire or incorrect wheel offset. Take the wheel off and see if you can tell where, or if, it is rubbing.
3. These tires were used and put on the car to sell it.
In any case you need to figure it out. If its reason 1 or 2 you will just be wasting another set of tires until you correct the problem. If its #3.....let the buyer beware

Good luck
Andrew
Also, I have had 2 sets Michelin's, 1 set Tiger Paw's, 1 set Falcon's and I got less than 20,000 except on the first Michelin I got 22,000.
Your driving style has a lot to do with wear.
I also get my Quattro aligned on all 4 corners every year.
