Is redrilling a wheel ok?

I've seen more than a few people have wheels redrilled from other fitments to 5x100 or 5x112, but are there any real issues with having this done?

I cannot imagine that this would be anything but a disastrously bad idea.

Wheels are made so that stress is distributed though the lines laid out by the casting of the wheel. Putting the lug holes in new places would totally throw this off.

Buy the right wheels and don't go down this path.
