Run flat tire question - Gary?

My local tire place ordered a set of ContiProContacts and installed them a week ago. When I was washing the war today I noticed that the tires are actually SPP tires - ie run flats.

Is there any advantage or disadvantage of leaving these on? Do they actually work as runflats on standard (VW) wheels?

It probably makes no difference but the tires are 225/45/16s

Hmmm..Conti doesn't make a tire in 225/45R16, maybe they are 17" or a different 16" size? Either way the "SSR" in after the name does indeed stand for Self Supporting Runflat and is a runflat tire. They'll ride more stiffly but will indeed work as a runflat tire on a standard wheel. Since it is nearly impossible to tell by look or feel that runflat tires are low in pressure you'll need to be extra careful about checking them. The Tire Rack won't even sell them to a car unless the vehicle has some forum of tire pressure monitoring system.

Sorry, I meant 17" - for my '06GTI

They say that they get their tires from TR but it appears that they had the SSRs in stock and put those on. Luckily it sounds as if that is OK and I can now take my spare out of my trunk - one less rattle....
