Default Snow tire height question on B5 A4...

I will be putting snows on some used 16" Swing wheels. Tire Rack shows a Blizzak WS-60 in 205/60-16 as $16/tire cheaper than a stock size 205/55-16. Is it worth it?

Miata.net tire calculator says it's .8" taller. Is this an issue on a B5? I've always been told a little taller tire is better in winter anyway.

Default since you're getting a great performing snow tire, I would not get the taller/narrower tire..

I would go with the 205/55 , then you would have great snow performance and still descent dry handling.

Did you buy the WS-60? In MN, you would know about snow and ice!

I have the Nokian Hakka2 on my car, and Michelin X-Ice on my wife's vehicle.

Default Decent dry handling?

Have you ever driven on a new Blizzak WS15 or WS50 or MZ01 or MZ02 or Revo1 or WS60? (or any of the other Q rated blizzak models)

I'm going to go with no ;-)

Default haha, you're funny!!

I will qualify (since you thank I need to) that with a snow tire, dry handling is all relative, as it WILL be less than any other type of tire. What I was refering to is that you will have better dry handling in the wider tire than the taller/narrower tire. I would assume that anybody buying a dedicated snow tire like the Ws-50 is not looking for great dry handling anyway as they will not get it. Make you more comfortable?? BTW I have driven on ALL of those tires you listed above, in ALL conditions, including the Bridgestone Ice track - which is where I got to test most of them

Default I don't like the RSi... ran it for a winter and it was too soft on dry pavement for my taste..

though it isn't as soft as the blizzak Q rated tires.

I have been impressed with the Michelin X-Ice for being an all round winter tire.

Luckily I bought the Nokian Hakka2 before the exchange rates got real bad, so didn't have to pay too much more than your blizzak pricing :-)

I'd say if you're going to do a LOT of driving on glare ice, the blizzak WS60 is a good choice. If you drive a lot on dry pavement, especially highway, but still want a tire that does good on the ice, I'd lean toward the X-Ice. Tirerack sells both.

The thing I don't like about the blizzaks with the tube multicell compound (their Q rated winter tires), is only the outer half of the tread. I like tires that have a consistent compound from base to tip.

Default Snow, packed snow, ice, slop, black ice, and maybe a teenage driver using it...

I agree on the Blizzak tread, but keep in mind that a half-tread snow tire isn't much of a snow tire anymore. It's not the kind of tire you wear down to the nubs to get your money out of it - you have to replace them fairly often. I don't run them until it gets sloppy and icy enough to really need them, then they're off again as soon as it warms up - they still only last 3 or 4 seasons.
